Ripple and its partners have been innovating Outcome Harvesting + Attitude Change since 2018. Here’s why.
Outcome Harvesting, originally developed by Ricardo Wilson-Grau, is especially well-suited for monitoring and evaluating social change initiatives in complex contexts. Unlike other approaches, it doesn’t rely on preconceived plans or the ability to predict specific results. Instead, it empowers program teams to identify, verify, and analyze the outcomes to which they’ve already contributed. These ‘outcomes’ are observable changes in the behavior of individuals, groups, organizations, or institutions. Behavior shifts are truly the building blocks of social change.
At the same time, there are some programs in which attitudes also matter a great deal. For example, attitudes play a crucial role in building relationships and solidarity across diverse communities, advancing gender equity or promoting climate action. Achieving outcomes may involve the inner transformation of unseen perceptions, assumptions, values, etc. In cases where attitudes are essential for achieving program results, Ripple integrates Attitude Change into Outcome Harvesting to better understand the process of “change inside and out.”
OH + AC Working Group
OH+AC has been a collaborative effort from the outset. We are grateful to Tearfund for publishing the first trial version toolkit. In addition, members of the OH+AC Working Group generously volunteer their expertise to help shape the technical and strategic direction of the approach. They create resource materials, deliver presentations, introduce others to the approach, and help cultivate a growing community of practice. We are building OH+AC together.
